We performed a video streaming experiment over a satellite link for 24 days distributed over one year to investigate the effects of rain fade. Based on the measurements, models for the relationships between rainfall rate, power level, packet loss, and video quality are proposed. Furthermore, for both uplink and downlink channel, an adaptive closed loop power control algorithm, with a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller is designed. This is used for the mitigation of the rain-induced attenuation in order to guarantee a certain level of Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE). Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed power control solution and its ability to sustain video quality levels in spite of rain fades. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

An adaptive FEC with QoS provisioning for real-time traffic in LEO satellite networks

This paper presents an adaptive forward error correction (AFEC) protocol that provides a reliable communication service for real-time trafflc over low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. In time-varying wireless links, such as LEO satellite networks, a reliable channel estimation scheme with an appropriate code selection technique is essential for adaptive error-control systems. This paper pr...

A Fuzzy Logic Based Power Control for Wideband Code Division Multiple Access Wireless Networks

Problem statement: Resource management is one of the most important engineering issues in 3G systems where multiple traffic classes are supported each being characterized by its required Quality of Service (QoS) parameters. Call Admission Control (CAC) is one of the resource management functions, which regulates network access to ensure QoS provisioning. Efficient CAC is necessary for the QoS p...

QoS provisioning in mobile video services with satellite sources

In this paper, we propose a real-time transcoding system to generate contents for mobile networks with QoS provisioning. Video transcoding is widely used to change storage formats. However, as far as the authors know, it has not been proposed to generate real-time contents. Although the philosophy in this paper can be extended to alternative video sources (all major open TV channels are broadca...
